As part of the railway infrastructure upgrade, in the new Ljubljana Transmodal Hub, a new underpass will be built on the street Dunajska cesta, which will enable driving on six or two additional tracks.
The static design enables switch connections between the tracks directly on the underpass itself, which will significantly affect the ability to maneuver train compositions in the area of the Central Railway Station.
Switching connections significantly reduce the available static height of the lintel structure, which was balanced by raising the level of the tracks and deepening the street with associated paths for cyclists and pedestrians.
Railway underpass is designed as lintel construction with three spans supported with reinforced concrete abutment and two inbetween supports. We have forseen deep foundation with drill reinforced concrete piles. Composite deck is consisted from six steel boxes and reinforced concrete plates.
In addition to the small available static height, unfavorable range ratio, and providing rigidity for the establishment of switch connections, the main challenge in the design was the phased construction and the fact that the full functionality of at least two railway tracks must be ensured at all times.
Demolition and construction will therefore be carried out in two separate phases. There will only be two short complete track closures, lasting between 15 and 20 hours to make contact between the concrete supports and the slab.
