The western plaza will be built as part of the Ljubljana Railway Station upgrade. The new high-quality public space reshapes the station’s entry experience for travelers and bypassers by providing transparency, easy orientation, and absolute accessibility.
The Plaza is a space for pedestrians and cyclists who can use one hundred bike racks and electric bike chargers. All urban elements for sitting, informing, and lightning are shaped to ease transit.
The design of the plaza, using “nature-based solutions”, ensures resilience to the impacts of climate change. Trees with high canopies are arranged in a grid to shade the extensive paved area and mitigate the impact of noise and dust from the road and railway. ‘Rain gardens’ – sunken islands of shrubs and perennials bring texture, seasonal accents, and a sense of shelter to the ambiance. They act as dry rainwater retainers, contributing to an improved microclimate.
Different infrastructure connections (tap water, mobile phone chargers) answer to a variety of temporary needs and uses of station visitors. Extra comfort is assured at the cafe garden under the trees.
