A major road tunnel interchange was built as part of a large road infrastructure project in Sydney. It consists of 12 main tubes, 6 access tunnels, 6 ventilation tunnels, 2 sheds, 3 ventilation centers, 59 cross-passages, and 6 substations. The combined length of the main tunnels is 19.0 km.
Our team was involved in the preparation of the tender offer for the design and execution of the project. Our main tasks were time planning and material distribution, optimization of sources, and comparisons of different design solutions based on parametric 3D BIM models we had created.
The client dictated an extremely fast-paced design development of characteristic cross-sections and/or tunnel alignment which compelled us to develop a workflow based upon databases and parametrization. This allowed us to swiftly conduct 4D and 5D analyses of parametric 3D models of excavation, primary and secondary lining, pavement, and evacuation equipment. These analyses built the basis, from which the client derived the optimal alternative, while we provided additional studies of construction organization optimization and resource usage.
