The Church of St. Francis of Assisi in Koper was built in 1268. It has undergone many changes since then. Today, the building is declared a historic monument. The church as a building used to be a church of mendicant orders. In the middle of the 18th century it was refurbished in baroque style, while the entire equipment was removed from it in 1809 and it ceased being used for clerical purposes. In 1969, it was refurbished into a gym used by the Grammar School of Koper until 1990, when the building was closed.
Based on a conservational plan, the Municipality of Koper in co-operation with the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia decided to renovate the church and to change its use designation. A thorough renovation in terms of architecture and statics was completed in 2014. The ceiling with baroque paintings was preserved and so were the wall paintings. The existing internal cornice was also renovated. An attachment to the main hall was built, which provides servicing facilities for the activities of the church. Once the reconstruction was over, the church got a new function and is today used as a protocolary building of the Municipality of Koper.
