The oldest section of A1 Šentilj-Srmin highway between Vrhnika and Postojna was worn off at certain sites and the traffic surface construction required not only maintenance works but radical retreading. Research has shown a very poor situation index on several sites on section 0654 Logatec–Unec from km 9.800 to km 10.431 and on section 0655 Unec–Postojna from km 0.000 to km 0.538, which was an indicator of reduced traffic safety.
Among others, the project of retreading of the road had to determine a new longitudinal profile of the motorway. As both the surfacing layer and the carrying layer with a thickness of 16 cm had to be renewed, special attention had to be paid to connecting ramps to the existing construction works. As the section in question is S-curved, the area of screw fastening had to be completely restructured; installation of drain asphalt was foreseen as well.
For safety reasons, activities affecting a wider area of the carriageway needed to be carried out: slopes were protected by packed rockfills, new steel safety fences needed to be installed, hydro insulation on the Unec viaduct (197 m in length) had to be remedied, and a total of 830 m of the surfacing on the entire access point Unec had to be replaced.
