The new railway station in Ljubljana is envisioned as an architectural bridge over the existing tracks. Spanning approximately 19,000 square meters, the station will host a variety of interconnected units, each contributing to the overall functionality of the hub. At the heart of this transformation will be a modern train station, seamlessly linked to the historic station built in 1849—a culturally significant monument.
The railway infrastructure upgrade includes a new overpass with a station hall, reconfigured tracks with new covered platforms, an extended and renovated underpass, and a refurbished station building. Green squares will be created on the east and west sides, enhancing the surrounding areas.
The station’s roof will feature a complex, slatted structure extending over the tracks and gently descending towards the platforms. The geometric design of the roof, with its angular surfaces, will allow natural light to filter through, creating a striking atmosphere that complements the sounds of trains arriving and departing. Passengers will access the platforms via escalators and elevators, while cyclists and pedestrians can traverse the extended underpass connecting the city center with Bežigrad, passing by pubs, service areas, and a bike park.
The historic station building will be enveloped by green open spaces, designed for easy orientation and accessibility from all directions. New tree plantings will provide shade and help mitigate the environmental impact of the road and railway. Special attention has been given to the sustainable management of rainwater, which will remain on the surface to enhance the microclimate.
This project is guided by long-term environmental goals, focusing on reducing noise, lowering greenhouse gas emissions, improving stormwater management, enhancing air quality, and moderating temperature extremes.
