The analysis was performed using advanced parametric algorithmic planning by means of the Grasshopper programme (plugin for the Rhinoceros programme) for the following reasons:
1. Renovation of the shopping centre was planned while the shopping centre was still operative. An algorithm developed according to an architect’s idea allowed us to rapidly include gradually obtained new information as the beginning of the renovation was approaching. The parameters of the geometry were: denseness of lamellas that continuously changes in a non-linear way along the main corridor; position, arrangement and size of waves of the geometry of lamellas. Moreover, we had to see to the adjustment to the existing structure and requirements/limitations of the execution technology and installation of the lamellas.
2. The parametric model was used for optimisation and decision support which were carried out pursuant to client’s and architect’s criteria (continuous course of lamellas, visibility of the carrying structure, dynamics of shapes, etc.). This approach made it easy to generate and analyse 25 intermediate and 4 final solution variants by way of multiple-criteria decision analysis (MCDM), on the basis of which the decision-makers (client and architect) made a decision concerning the optimal shape and denseness of the lamellas.
The applied parametric algorithmic modelling is very flexible allowing an architect not only to freely design but also to efficiently manage the most important effects, goals and requirements (decision criteria).
