The Swedish company IKEA decided to build a long-awaited shopping center in Slovenia when BIM was still in its infancy; nevertheless, its use was one of the basic requirements of an advanced client. We decided to prove our BIM expertise in addition to the abilities of classical design for such a large project. Following the initial arrangements, we set up a BIM Implementation Plan (BEP). We established a Common Data Environment (CDE), which allowed us to share different BIM models with all the designers.
We produced architectural, structural, and MEP BIM models in parallel with the design of the building. MEP models posed the biggest challenge, which we successfully solved with our Viennese partners (iC Consulenten ZT). Continuous coordination proved crucial for the consistency of the final federated BIM model as we checked all models against each other. By doing so, we essentially eliminated the inconsistencies between designs from different disciplines, which will result in significant financial and time savings during construction. We have thus proved that with the right approach, ingenuity, and sufficient knowledge, it is possible to successfully implement BIM technologies at such a large project as the IKEA shopping center.
