The commercial centre IKEA Ljubljana is designed according to standards of the existing IKEA centres. It includes a typical entrance, furniture exhibition room, a shopping section, goods takeover area, cashpoints, a restaurant, café and additional facilities for customers, a warehouse, offices, and facilities for employees, a technical department, and a parking space.
We paid special attention to the selection of the most suitable construction system, as we wanted to maximise the functionality of the building as well as lower the costs of construction and maintenance. The modern construction of IKEA Ljubljana is designed from prefabricated concrete elements with post-tensioning mezzanine constructions and a light steel roof in an optimised raster grid. For heating, cooling and ventilation we used the warmth of the groundwater, mostly without using heat pumps (i.e., free cooling) by utilising the so-called core-heating system.
A special feature of the IKEA project is also its compliance with the high sustainability standards of the BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) Certificate and the fact that it was exclusively designed with state-of-the-art BIM technology (3D, 4D and 5D). IKEA Ljubljana thus became the first of its kind to be designed using solely BIM technology, the latest and most innovative approach to civil engineering.
