The hotel Intercontinental was erected at the end of 2017. Its above-ground height of 82 m made it the second-highest business/residential building in Slovenia. The erection of the building having 4 subterranean stories and 22 above-ground stories progressed extremely rapidly despite a very confined building site at the intersection of Slovenska and Tivolska roads in Ljubljana. Since the starting project phase, the micro-location of the building had a decisive impact on the architectural design of the building and consequently on the carrying structure design.
The reinforced-concrete construction of the building was erected on improved foundation ground in a 13 m deep open construction pit protected by multi-anchored secant piles. The execution of smooth, subsequently stressed reinforced-concrete slabs allowed the execution of longer console projections of stories, a more lightweight and slender structure, and more rapid work progress. The building has high earthquake safety due to the arrangement of a reinforced-concrete wall core in the center of the ground plan and due to circumferential columns.
