The old building of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics from 1970 could no longer meet all needs, so a restructuring and extension with three new storeys was envisaged.
The upgrading of the existing three-storey building entailed considerable interference into foundations and both lower storeys: the frame construction with columns and supports without supporting walls was inadequate to take over foreseen earthquake forces. After the second floor with the roof was completely demolished, the foundations were first worked on. The existing Franky piles with reinforced by new piles according to a system joining the Jet Grouting technology and a system of micro piles GEVI.
New reinforced-concrete walls were added in the ground floor to unburden the existing frame skeleton construction, while columns and beams in the first floor were reinforced in the bottom and upper nodal points by wrapping the nodal points into SIKA WRAP carbon textile. The existing reinforced-concrete construction thus reinforced against earthquakes was then upgraded by a steel construction in four storeys.
The renovated building with six storeys is now extended by additional 5,600 m² of net surfaces.
