The Portoval project is an attempt at an alternative approach to architecture of shopping centres. The centre was designed on the basis of a conviction that a conventional model of an excluded, self-sufficient building that makes a city empty and impoverished, can be avoided and turned into a strategic project which can make an active contribution to the revival of the city. The entertainment, commercial and business centre Portoval includes multiplex cinema, leisure park, super market, multi-purpose store, pubs, offices, and a garage. The building covers a gross area of 23,935 m², of that 15,055 m² in the basement.
The multiplex cinema is that part of the building, which stands out from the remaining part in terms of architecture and construction. It is a steel construction which is virtually divided into a narrower central communication part, and two lateral parts occupied by halls. The separation is completely blurred in the bottom part, the vestibule, so this is an integral room with huge ranges of the mezzanine construction. The architect required creation of an impression of floating cinema halls accommodating more than 500 seats, and this was only feasible by an in-depth study of the construction and by using innovative approaches to constructing key details.
