We designed a new underpass at the Nova Gorica railway station which is being renovated. The new underpass will also form an urban link between the center of the city and Europe Square.
The project includes track upgrades, construction of an underpass, and new steel canopies over the new platforms.
The current tracks are only partially used, therefore we have foreseen the withdrawal of freight traffic. The renovated railway station will be used for passenger traffic only. Passengers will have safer off-platform access to the tracks. Mobility-impaired and disabled will have easy access to the platforms using facilities underneath the tracks.
The structure is designed as a reinforced concrete box. The inner side of the underpass lintel is shaped in the form of arches. Due to the active railway traffic, we planned the construction in phases.
The protection of the excavations between the phases was implemented with pile curtains. Both entrances to the underpass resemble a sinkhole.
