The Cukrarna building was built in 1828 and was used as a sugar refinery for most of the 19th century. It is an important architectural monument of 19th-century industrial architecture. In the past, several attempts for renovation were made, yet an integral redevelopment was never carried out.
The original building was designed as a brick structure. We have foreseen demolition of all internal carrying and partition walls, while the peripheral walls of the building are preserved. New steel structures between the stories were executed. The structures were suspended on a steel structure of the roof truss and horizontally fastened into the existing brick walls which were reinforced by a reinforced-concrete cladding. The ground floor story has no vertical carrying elements, except the peripheral walls. The footings of the building were encased by concrete, expanded, and reinforced by jet-grouting piles.
The main entrance to the building is on the riverside. In front is a platform that serves as a bicycle and pedestrian path. On the opposite side, facing Roška Street, is a cafe that also functions as an occasional event space.
The cafe’s entrance features an amphitheater-style staircase that leads up to a small parking area for visitors.
